Focus on Needs

Too often people get into a career, job or business because of passion.  Ever hear about the barista at Starbucks that just loves animals?  He’s got a degree in Marine Biology, graduated top of his class and spends his time working at SBUX.  “Follow your passion” is what colleges want you to do because they can make boatloads of specific degrees that will get you NO WHERE in the real world.  You need to focus your time and energy on what is needed in this world rather than YOUR PASSION.

Needs are important.  The world doesn’t need another Marine Biologist.  The world always needs another salesperson. People who are good at sales make the world go round.  They make the economy good.  They have complete control of their income and lifestyle.  People often forget that!

The world is changing quickly.  IT services, cyber security, website designers, and coders are taking over.  Heck, the guy who does my lawn needed a website or I would have never hired him to do my landscaping. Google is taking over our lives.  So while you’d love to play with penguins in a Zoo…  you’re probably much better off writing a blog about penquins online and selling stuffed penguins from your e-commerce store.

Listen to what Mel Robbins has to say:

Passion is Overrated.  Lifestyle matters.

What do you want to do when you’re not working?  That’s the real question.  Do want to be snowboarding down a glacier in Canada?  Do you want to be spending your mornings with your kids?  Do you want to travel the world?  In 1981 these things were not possible.  Nowadays – you can do your work from anywhere.  People have complete control of their lives.  If you think that you need to be chained to a desk for 50 hours a week, every week – you couldn’t be farther from the truth.

Follow the need.

Stop following your passion.

Focus on Your Strengths

Never try to improve your weakness unless it’s 100% necessary to bootstrap your business.  Bootstrapping is when you cut corners on expenses and reinvest in your business to help it grow.  Meaning although a CRM would be nice you stick to an excel spreadsheet in order to save that $10 for month while reinvesting that $10 into money making investments.

Knowing your strengths is one of the biggest keys to running a successful business.  If you know you have a strength in sales then you need to get a fulfillment team in place.  Rather if you know that you’ve got a knack for fulfillment and can handle the expertise of training a team on how to fulfill all the orders that come in you should be focusing on that.  As I briefly mentioned in my background you should know your DISC personality.

Many people have gone above and beyond in their explanations behind DISC.  You should spend time researching those people.  There is a lot to be learned about personality types and in turn you’ll start to learn about your own strength.  You’ll notice what kind of person you are and in different situations you’ll be able to adjust yourself to work better with other people.  In the business world it’s all about relationships.  You need to be able to develop a strong relationship with associates, your team and your fans.  Knowing the DISC of the person that you’re trying to reach on a weekly basis to consume or use your product is of great importance.

Take a couple minutes and watch this Ted Talk and then Google “DISC”.

Please do it in that order.  The process will make so much more sense if you follow my instructions!
